Description

Added by Hannah Kwasman

This out-and-back hike gives you panoramic views of Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding Cabinet Mountains of Idaho and Montana.

The trail from the parking area to the peak is 4 miles long, but gains nearly 3700 feet of elevation. It's not for the faint of heart, as the trail goes uphill the entire way with few to zero flat sections or downhills. Also note that this is a "dry" trail - there are no water sources for you to purify, so be sure to take plenty of water especially if the sun is out and the temperatures are high. I suggest starting early to beat the heat on your way up, and to plan on this hike taking up the entire day.

The beginning section of the trail is very steep and straight, taking you through beautiful conifer trees. Odds are you won't notice the beautiful forest until you're on your way down, as this uphill section is killer. The trail "flattens" out a bit and turns into switchbacks as you work your way through a mixed forest. About two thirds of the way up, the trees start to spread out and you'll be exposed to beautiful grasses with little shade. You'll make your way through another forested section before hitting completely exposed rocks that take you up to the summit. You'll know when you reach the summit as there is a small wooden structure. Be careful and take your time on the way down!

Note: There is a good chance of seeing mountain goats. They are wild animals and it's important to heed to the warnings posted at the trailhead. Also, this trail often has snow throughout the summer. I hiked it in early June and there was a lot of snow in the forested section before the exposed rocks - the trail essentially disappeared and we had to follow previous footsteps to find our way up.
