Hiking to Skaftafellsjokull Glacier in Vatnajokull National Park

This flat, easy trail starts on a paved path at the Visitor's Center. The trail is well-marked and you can't really stray off the path. There is plenty to see along the way, such as a small waterfall to your left and mountains the distance, but the main event is reaching the glacier at the end. We were there on a beautiful day and the sky and small lake in front of the glacier were equally stunning. We stayed at the glacier for about 30 minutes taking pictures and admiring the view. To return to the Visitor's Center, you can take the same trail or take a connecting trail that's slightly more challenging as it goes up a few hills which provide for great views of the park to the south and takes you through some pretty shrubbery. I found taking this trail to be more interesting than the one we took to reach the glacier.

I saw a lot of beautiful, awe-inspiring sights in Iceland, but none compared to this for me. I'm a Florida girl who gets excited by frost on the ground; seeing a glacier was simply amazing. If you only have a short time in Vatnajokull National Park, this is the hike I'd recommend most.
