Back to Spring Mill State Park

The Return to an Old Favorite

By: Dave Oakley + Save to a List

When my sister and I were kids, back in the 60's, our parents would take us camping every summer. That was our vacation. So over the course of a years, we had camped in about every state park in Indiana and several in Ohio. Spring Mill was always on of our favorites. Well, fast forward to 2017. I'm widowed and my sister is married and we went back to Spring Mill fora couple days. We explored the Pioneer Village, which is only open in the summer months, Hamer Cave, Double Cave, Donaldson Cave, the Grissom Museum and several other places. The longest trail is about 2.5 miles and listed as "rugged" and there are shorter trails. The area is very hilly with a lot of limestone outcroppings. Just North of the park across the river is a section of road called The Devils Backbone. Now, there are a lot of roads, paved and gravel in the area and it's an experience finding your way around little towns like Budda, Tunnelton, Bono, Ft. Ritner. Take a GPS, a compass, signal mirror and maybe a flare gun,....just kidding on that last one. It is a great place to explore and is quite beautiful in the fall.

We want to acknowledge and thank the past, present, and future generations of all Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples whose ancestral lands we travel, explore, and play on. Always practice Leave No Trace ethics on your adventures and follow local regulations. Please explore responsibly!
