Explore Great Sand Dunes National Park in Winter

Alamosa County, Colorado

Description

Added by Grace Ditzenberger

Visit the stunning national park in wintertime to see a snow-covered desert.

Head to the Great Sand Dunes National Park by Alamosa, Colorado. Follow the well-marked trail and signs to hike the dunes in the winter. It is easier to hike in the winter because the typically loose sand is packed down from the snow.

Initially, you will cross a breathtaking valley with the dunes rising ahead and the dramatic peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range dominating the backdrop. Once you reach the dunes, you may try to hike the steep elevation gain head on or switchback your way up. From here, it is up to you as to where you want to explore.
