Hiking Among the Centennial Cones
Golden, Colorado
Description
Added by Joshua Tree
Awesome county park (Jefferson County) not far from DenverStellar semi-backcountry vistas that encapsulate the foothills
Centennial Cone is an absolutely unique experience for a frontrange county park. The back-country feel, combined with the park being JeffCo's largest, would have you feeling "away from it all," however, the trail has moderate usage and you are bound to run into a biker or two along the way. Weekends have alternate biker/hiker scheduling, so be sure to check their website for details as to when you can hike.
We did not do the full trail but proceeded until the unique private property that you are allowed to trespass. A burnt out house was at the end of our out-and-back romp, making a cool visual for the large foothill fields around us.
Getting there: From Blackhawk, a duck down Douglas Mountain Road has slow switchback ascents that can be done by any capable vehicle. There is a well kept parking lot with restrooms, which was not packed on the Monday we visited.
