Description

Imagine starting your trek at 11,539 feet and ending up at 12,225 feet looking out at the beautiful views of the surrounding snow-covered mountains. Don’t let the cold weather stop you! Winter brings breath-taking scenery to Colorado, so pack your snowshoes and camera and head to Hosier Pass.

This hike is great for anyone looking to get the rush of hiking above the tree line without feeling the intense effects of altitude sickness from elevation gains. However, everyone reacts differently at higher altitudes so be sure to read-up on Altitude Sickness symptoms and how to handle them correctly before you head out to ensure a safe and fun hike. Also, pack your snowshoes or cross country skis during the winter months to assist you with getting through potentially deep snow. Crampons are definitely a good idea to use if there are icy conditions but not a lot of snow on the ground.

To get to the trailhead take County Road 850 and drive south on Highway 9 to Hoosier Pass, which is about 9.7 miles from the last traffic light in Breckenridge. You can park your car on the right in the lot with the Continental Divide sign. Be sure to checkout the map before heading out to adventure to scope out which avalanche-prone areas to avoid. From the sign head up the road to a steep incline where you will see a sign “no motor vehicles.” Remember this sign because you will be returning this way as you complete the loop heading back. About a half-mile later you will see another road called #208. Continue on this road to the mine ruins (you’ll see a large metal shed) and up the hill to a “no trespassing” sign. Here you will have made it to 12,225 feet and you better whip out your camera to capture the amazing mountains surrounding you, including Mt. Lincoln! From here you will see trail 208 ascend up a ridge and along a trail that will loop back to the main trail to the parking lot.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and explore!
