Sunset hike to Quarry Rock Deep Cove

Awesome Sunset

By: Carolyn Steingard + Save to a List

Last Monday night a friend and I did a sunset hike to the Quarry Rock in Deep Cove. This is such a great hike if you are looking for something short that will still give a great cardio workout. It is part of the 48 km Baden Powell trail which extends from Deep Cove over to Horseshoe Bay.

This little section takes you to a lookout point that offers amazing views of Burrard Inlet heading up Indian Arm. It also offers great views of Anmore across the water, Burnaby and the little town of Deep Cove.

The hike is about 1 1/2 hours return and offers a 100 metre elevation gain. It is very rooty so you need to watch your step and also has quite a few stairs. When we arrived at the Lookout point there was a large group of people there to watch the sunset. The rock can be quite busy so finding a place to sit is always fun. My friend and I found our spots just as the sun was starting to lower in the sky. There were a few clouds in the sky which added some really nice color.

I set my camera up on a Gorilla Pod and managed to get a few decent shots. We stayed until after the sunset and the blue hour set in and then had the fun task of hiking back in the dark. We had headlamps which is always recommended when hiking in  the dark.

I highly recommend this hike if you are looking for something to do after work or have a few hours to kill. If you are really adventurous, hike over to Horseshoe Bay. It will only take you 16 hours.
