Hudson Bay Mountain Winter Creek Hike
Smithers, British Columbia
Description
Added by Curtis Cunningham
Amazing scenery. Great exercise. Elevation gain: 500ft. Distance: 1.2 miles roundtrip.
After a 6.7 km drive west from the corner of Toronto St and Hwy 16 in Smithers, BC, you'll come to a clearing where you can either park your vehicle and walk, or continue driving 2 km up the road to a provincial recreation site.
From there (starting at 757m, lat/long: 54.82574647 / -127.27593041), instead of continuing up the well marked path, walk through the trees to where you meet the stream that has made it's way down from the falls. Depending on the exact time of year (usually within the first couple weeks of November), and how much snow has fallen, you may or may not see much water flowing. Heavy snowfall masks the uneven nature of the ground you'll be walking on so snowshoes and hiking poles would greatly aid your walk up the stream bed.
One of the interesting things that happens as you walk up the stream bed is that in certain places you'll hear the water running underneath your feet, but be unable to see it. It's almost eerie to hear the gurgling water echoing around you as you walk up the path carved through the trees that surround you.
You should also be aware that there are large rocks and fallen trees that will litter your path as you make your way up to the waterfall.
You'll end your hike at approximately 890m elevation, lat/long: (54.82193755 / -127.28354252) where you'll see the waterfall in all it's frozen glory. Once you've reached the top, you can either return to your vehicle the way you came up, or take the well marked and maintained path that paralleled your journey up.
