Upper McCloud Falls is a tranquil gem nestled within the McCloud River Three Falls Hike (Upper, Middle, and Lower), renowned for its scenic overlooks and idyllic picnic spots. Located in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, California, accessing Upper Falls requires a day pass or an annual recreation pass, available online or at the nearby ranger station. Unlike its downstream counterparts, Middle and Lower Falls, Upper Falls offers a quieter, more sheltered swimming hole, set amidst a deep basalt-rimmed bowl.
Though not towering in height, the falls and pool below exude charm, especially during the scorching summer months when seeking respite from the heat. Shaded for part of the day, the swimming hole's chilly spring-fed waters is a great spot for visitors to unwind and refresh.
Autumn, with its vibrant foliage, and spring, with the snowmelt from surrounding peaks, also present captivating vistas around Upper Falls. Hiking trails lead to various viewpoints, perfect for capturing the beauty of the falls and surrounding landscape. Before embarking on your journey, check weather forecasts and ensure you're equipped with sturdy footwear for the uneven terrain.
