Stroll under the redwoods in this quiet regional park, just east of San Francisco.

To see California redwoods, you have to brave the crowds at Muir Woods or drive all the way up to Humbolt, right? Wrong. Just across SF bay is Redwood Regional Park, a little slice of forest heaven.

Park at Skyline Gate Staging Area and start on the Stream Trail. At dawn and dusk, keep an eye out for baby bunnies along the path. Soon enough the brush gives way to towering redwoods, the air gets cooler, and silence takes over.

Take a right at Tres Sendas, where you'll see a bench to rest at. Continue on and find the large fallen redwood tree, where you'll likely see other hikers taking photos. Immediately after the tree, hang a left and follow the Starflower Trail (with a name like that, you gotta go...), which climbs up out of the gully.

Take a left when you get to French Trail, and wind your way around the hill. Take the Mill Trail back down to the stream, where you'll find picnic tables among the grass. Enjoy a quick snack there and listen to sound of water making its way past you.

To get back to the parking lot, just follow the Stream Trail back to where you started.
