No matter your preference, Rib Mountain offers hikers miles of options including a well traveled paving, steep inclines from the face or more rustic adventures through the quarry.
Rib Mountain State Park, located off Hwy 51 on the southwest side of Wausau, is a recreational haven for the area’s outdoor enthusiasts. Free parking is available at the base of Park Road to take the paved route into the State Park. It’s quite popular and can fill up. Bikers looking to really gruel it out flock to this route as well.
Another option is to park at the Granite Peak ski chalet to really challenge yourself up the steep face trails. Once you’ve reached the top, you are rewarded with beautiful views of the waterways, farms and forests, and city landscape as well. Climb the 60 foot tower to really enjoy the far reaching views or stick to the many miles of trails that route around the ancient rock ridge.
We often enjoy the quarry trails off Grouse Lane. These offer historic significance surrounding the settlement of the area and tranquility of the forest. Circle around to the top of the rock sheer to observe the turkey vultures carried high on the winds. Any way you choose can connect to the other trails, to the park’s amenities, and to the beauty of Rib Mountain.
