A fantastic way to explore Albion Basin and the incredible wildflowers it contains. Hike to a beautiful mountain pass and look down on a gorgeous high-alpine lake.

Catherine Pass is a must do if you are in the Salt Lake vicinity in July. The wildflowers are mind-blowing. But it’s a great hike to do in the Spring, after Alta Ski Resort has closed, and the Fall as well.

It costs $6 per vehicle to drive to the trailhead, or $10 per person to ride the lift (if it’s running). Park at the midway parking lot and head East up the slope, or step off the lift and head upward. This route can also be mountain biked. The trail is 3 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 1,115 feet.

It’s a steady climb with great views of Devils castle to the south. You’ll pass through a beautiful high-alpine meadow and then switchback up to the pass. When you reach the pass, you’re greeted with scenic Lake Catherine below.

From this vantage point, you have several options: head south and summit Sunset Peak, head north and summit Mount Wolverine or head east and hike down to the Lake Catherine. Past Lake Catherine are two more beautiful lakes (Mary and Martha) that are usually accessed from the Brighton side.

Or you can just sit where you are and admire the view.
