Cathedral in the Desert is a jaw-dropping monument in Glen Canyon. The monument strongly resembles a cathedral, and is currently buried 100 feet below the surface of Lake Powell. Higher lake levels allow for hiking access to the upper chamber of the cathedral.
Cathedral in the Desert quite literally mimics a common cathedral, with projections in the sandstone varnish that stretch upward on the narrow canyon walls that resemble spires on churches. The spires are accompanied by a 60 foot waterfall pouring into the giant natural amphitheater of sandstone and slivers of sunlight. When the water is low in Lake Powell, the Cathedral in the Desert is visible.
