This is a fun hike that showcases Southern Utah's slick rock and scenic desert away from the crowds of Zion National Park.
The trailhead is located on a dirt road that crosses UT-18 N diagonally in Dameron Valley outside of St. George. About five miles after turning onto the dirt road there will be a road on the left just before a ditch with running water. Turn left here. This the parking lot and trailhead for the trail.
From the parking lot, the trail starts on a sandy path that climbs up to the sandstone hills that roll throughout the valley. Cairns mark the trail as it continues up a small valley between the two rock hills.
The trail will then switchback up the rock hill on the right. When you reach the top, walk along the ridge and you will find the Vortex, which is a giant bowl worn into the rock.
In the dry season, hikers can climb down into the bowl, but if it has rained recently (like it did when I went) the bowl will have a large puddle of water.
This hike gives you the perfect opportunity to explore and climb on the rocks and enjoy the beauty of southern Utah.
