Itinerary

Transfer from Launceston, walk to Wild Dog Creek Camp

Your journey begins when we pick you up from your Launceston accommodation at approximately 7:30am and transfer to the picturesque township of Deloraine. After a brief stop for coffee, we drive through the stunning Mersey Valley towards the mountains of the Great Western Tiers and Central Plateau.Arriving at the trail-head, you wave farewell to your driver and start your self guided walk. The track climbs through Eucalyptus dominated sclerophyll forest up to the historic Trapper’s hut; a great spot for a rest before tackling the final challenging section of this steep but rewarding ascent.Upon reaching the lip of the alpine plateau, the track levels out and the views open up all around you: grand, jagged peaks of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, sparkling glacial tarns and ancient conifer forests as far as the eye can see. In the afternoon you reach your base camp at Wild Dog Creek and set up your tent beneath King Davids Peak for your first night under the stars. Walking Distance: 6 km | Walking Time: 4 hours | Driving Time: 2-2.5 hours

Self guided walks in Walls of Jerusalem National Park

This morning you can enjoy breakfast while watching the sunrise light up the surrounding wilderness. Then, in your own time, leave your gear and tents set up at Wild Dog Creek and carry only the necessities in a day pack as you head off to explore the central Walls area.A recommended day walk option is to follow the main track south-east through Herods Gate, past the sublime Lake Salome and then on under the imposing West Wall dominated by King Davids Peak and Solomons Throne. This will lead you to a track junction at Damascus Gate where you continue in a south easterly direction to slowly descend into the magnificent and ancient pencil forest of Dixons Kingdom. From the historic hut you follow a well defined path through Jaffa Gate, past an array of tarns before ascending the trail up to the top of Mt Jerusalem. From the summit you are given a superb panorama of the Walls and across the glittering expanse of 'The Land of A Thousand Lakes' that stretches across to the Central Plateau.Walking Distance: 8-12km | Walking Time: 6-8 hours

Self guided walks in Walls of Jerusalem National Park, return to Launceston

After breakfast and packing up camp at Wild Dog Creek the final day of your trip provides you with plenty of time to once again leave the bulk of your gear and wander back up the track to explore. You can climb a trail of amazing rock-work through the boulder field of The Temple for a final all encompassing view of this spectacular, irreplaceable World Heritage area. Alternatively, take the relatively short scramble up to the peak of Solomons Throne from where you can gaze along the ridge line to King Davids Peak and south west to Lake Adelaide, the head waters of the Mersey River. Both these walks are approximately 2 hours return from Wild Dog Creek base camp.Allow at least four hours to return to the car park from Wild Dog Creek. Your transport will be waiting to collect you at your pre-arranged time in the afternoon and transfer you back to your accommodation in Launceston.Walking Distance: 6-13km | Walking Time: 4-6 hours*WANT TO SPEND MORE TIME IN THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM? Additional Information

For experienced walkers a self guided trek into Tasmania's majestic Walls of Jerusalem National Park should be high on the agenda. Only accessible by foot, this spectacular and remote glacier carved landscape is Tasmania's one true alpine National Park. After a briefing from our experienced guides in Launceston you are transferred to the trail-head for a short, steep hike to the comfortable base camp, complete with toilets and tent platforms. From here it's up to you where you wish to explore. Leaving your main gear at base camp, enjoy delightful day walks with light packs into the heart of 'the Walls'. You'll have the chance to climb King David's Peak and Mt Jerusalem, from where views stretch across much of Tasmania, or venture to remote outer regions such as Golden Gate or Zion Vale. The biblical names for the many highlights in the area adds to the imagery and drama of this other-worldly region that is void of the crowds of better known trails in Tasmania. Each day you'll return to the base camp, situated near a cluster of beautiful alpine tarns known as Solomons Jewels, and surrounded by native wildlife. This self guided walking adventure is a great introduction for those wishing to extend their hiking CV to independent walking in remote wilderness. With food, equipment, safety and transport taken care of, you are free to focus on making the most of the unique and unforgettable walking opportunities on offer in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park.
