Arrive Chengdu, China

You will be met by a representative of World Expeditions and transferred to the hotel. Remainder of the afternoon/evening at leisure. Overnight: Chengdu Jaho Forstar Wenshuyuan or similar

Fly Chengdu to Lhasa (3,670m)

This morning we transfer to Chengdu Airport to take the one hour flight to Lhasa (flight not included). On arrival at Lhasa Airport you will be transferred to the city – a drive that takes around two hours. In Lhasa (3,670m)

Three days are scheduled in Lhasa to appreciate its rich cultural history. We include visits to the Jokhang, the Norbulingka (the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama), and the famous Potala Palace. To Tsetang (3,100m)

Located southeast of Lhasa in the picturesque Yarlung Valley, the Tsetang region is home to many historical sites. We will visit the Thadruk Droma Monastery which houses a famous pearl Thangka. Drive: ~3hrsAltitude: 3,100mOvernight: basic local hotel

Visit to Samye Monastery (3,580m)

Samye Monastery was the first Buddhist monastery built in Tibet. It is nestled in a spectacular valley and a visit to Tibet would not be complete without a visit to this significant site. The first Tibetan monks were ordained at Samye, and are known as the ‘Seven Examined Men’. For many travellers, the visit to Samye is a highlight of theirentire journey. In Lhasa (3,670m)

The drive back to Lhasa is approximately 2-3 hours and we will arrive in Lhasa around 1:00 pm. The rest of the day is at leisure in Lhasa.Drive: ~3hrsAltitude: 3,670mOvernight: Gangjian Hotel or similar

Return flight to Chengdu, trip concludes

This morning we make the drive back to Lhasa Airport for our return flight to Chengdu (flights not included). On arrival in Chengdu Airport, our trip concludes.

Additional Information

This is the ideal short trip to explore the ancient city of Lhasa and some of its surrounding monasteries and other cultural highlights. We include visits to the Jokhang, the Norbulingka (the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama), the famous Potala Palace as well as side trips to the nearby monasteries of Drepung, Sera or Tsurpu. Sera Monastery is located approximately 5km north of the Jokang and includes 19 hermitages, including four nunneries, which are all located in the foot hills north of Lhasa. Visiting these ancient Buddhist sites, including Samye, the first monastery established in Tibet, will give you a fantastic insight into both ancient and modern life within Tibet. This short trip can also be added before or after any of our other Himalayan departures.
