Overnight train to Varanasi

You will be collected from your hotel in Delhi and transferred to the train station for your overnight train to Varanasi. The train we book, subject to availability, is the Shivganga Express which departs Delhi at 18:25 and arrives into Varanasi at 07:30. We recommend that you have dinner before travelling on the train and take some snacks with you. Our representatives will assist you in locating your carriage and will take you on board to your compartment, before the train departs, but they will not travel with you to Varanasi. The experience of travelling by train in India is one not to be missed. Indian rural life often revolves around the train tracks and as you travel (in the fading day lights hours) you will witness the changing landscape and with it the changing cultures.

Arrive Varanasi, visit Sarnath

On arrival in Varanasi, you will be met by a representative of our local agent and transferred to the hotel for breakfast. Generally your room will be available on arrival so that you can freshen up. Later in the morning you will meet your local guide and travel through the countryside to Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism and the site of Buddha's first teachings. Here we will visit the museum where there are some excellent sculptures, in addition to the Asoka's pillar, the ruins of the Mulagandhakuti and the huge Dharmek Stupa. We return to the hotel and the remainder of the day is free for you to explore town.

In Varanasi

Early this morning we head to the ghats for an unforgettable sunrise over the Ganges. Our sightseeing today will also include the old city which stands on the west bank of the sacred Ganges and extends back from the ghats in a winding maze of narrow streets. A principle attraction is the long string of bathing ghats where pilgrims make their early morning cleansing wash in the river and we plan to visit the burning ghats where pilgrims are cremated before their last journey down the Ganges. Varanasi is steeped with religious history and culture and the great temples and mosques provide for a fascinating insight into the heart of Indian culture.

Trip concludes in Kathmandu

This morning your guide will transfer you to the airport for your flight to Kathmandu. On arrival you will be collected by a representative of World Expeditions and transferred to your hotel. This evening's accommodation is not included in the trip price. Please ask about our special rate at the Radisson Hotel, Kathmandu.

Additional Information

A four-day extension that can be taken either after one of our trips in India, or before visiting Nepal. We include a visit to Sarnath, where Buddha preached his path to enlightenment. In Varanasi our souls are stimulated in one of India's holiest cities situated on the banks of the Ganges.
