Itinerary

Hobart to Bruny Island

Today we collect you from your Hobart accommodation between 7-7:30am and travel in a southerly direction following the Derwent River to the town of Kettering. While we await our ferry to Bruny Island we can visit the waterfront café for a coffee, and our guides will give an overview of the trip and ensure that you have appropriate gear for the varied adventures ahead. We board the Mirambeena, the ferry service connecting Bruny Island to the mainland. Crossing the D’entrecasteaux Channel provides us with sensational views back to the Mt Wellington range until we disembark 30 minutes later to begin exploring the island. Shortly after arriving we jump on our trusty bikes and ride through open pastureland and coastal forest before stopping at some of Bruny Island’s wonderfully delicious food producers. A ‘drive through’ oyster bar, whiskey tasting and famous cheeses are a few of the highlights of what Tasmania has to offer the discerning connoisseur. After sampling the fine foods, we continue on towards the famous ‘neck’; a natural causeway which separates the island’s two distinct sections. A short walk to a viewing platform provides breathtaking views across the island and southern Tasmania. From here we can choose to undertake a lovely coastal walk at Cape Queen Elizabeth or continue cycling south. We head towards Adventure Bay where more gourmet treats await: a boutique chocolate factory, a ‘help yourself’ berry farm and a café with a mouth-watering menu and an incomparable view over the Tasman Sea.With a day of adventure and discovery behind us we spend the evening relaxing at our modest accommodation situated in sleepy Adventure Bay.Cycle distance: 36km | Walking time: up to 3 hours

Bruny Island Explore

An early start will see us catching an east coast sunrise and enjoying a hearty breakfast before heading out to explore this stunning island hideaway. The morning's walk, Fluted Cape, is one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks and not to be missed. The trail leads us up from the peaceful coastline through eucalyptus woodland before opening up to reveal the truly stunning vista of the sea cliffs of Fluted Cape towering high above the ocean below. From here magnificent views of the Tasman Peninsula and beyond can be obtained as well as the opportunity to spot an abundance of both marine and terrestrial wildlife.Enjoying the spectacular views at every turn before we make our way back to Adventure Bay for a quick beverage and recharge before embarking on our next activity for the day – the award winning Bruny Island Cruise. On this ‘trip of a life time’ tour you will witness the mighty power of the Southern Ocean, awe inspiring sea stacks and coastal caves. Dolphins and seals are commonly seen as well as a plethora of seabirds. To complete the wonderful day, you will then be taken to South Bruny National Park to view the nation’s 4th oldest Lighthouse and the beautiful Cape Bruny. Bruny to Huon Valley

This morning we bid farewell to Bruny Island as we embark upon the return ferry. After arriving back on the mainland we continue south following the picturesque channel through idyllic country towns and coastal hamlets. An interesting choice for the morning is our stop at Grandvewe Cheese whose produce is all made from sheep’s milk! Judged #6 out of Australia’s 6000 fine food producers it is well worth the visit.Next we enjoy the amazing scenery from our touring bikes as we work our way along the winding road to the mouth of the Huon Channel. Arriving in the quaint township of Cygnet, we have time to enjoy a scrumptious lunch and wander around the town and enjoy its vibrant arts, food and alternative lifestyle. Leaving Cygnet, we can opt for a challenge and head off to the impressive Pelverata Falls. This bushwalk through mixed forest leads us up into the hills behind Woodstock and reveals a stunning waterfall cascading from atop soaring dolerite columns. Afterwards we can sample one of the regions renowned breweries: Pagan Cider. Being now firmly in ‘apple country’ you will be pleasantly surprised at the different varieties of cider on offer. With a warm glow in our belly and a contented smile upon our faces (except the driver!) we head to Huonville and then on to our accommodation at Port Huon. This evening we head out for a delicious dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.Cycle distance: up to 50km | Walking distance: up to 6km

Huon Valley

Leaving Port Huon in the morning we journey into the Southern Forests. These areas are associated with a long history of timber and craft communities. Our morning’s destination is the Tahune Airwalk. This amazing feat of engineering gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the confluence of the Huon and Picton rivers and the majestic mixed eucalypt forest of swamp gums – the tallest flowering plant in the world. The rainforest understorey adds interest with short walks leading to one of the oldest living tree species, the Huon Pine. After a picnic lunch which includes delicacies gathered over the last few days, we journey up to Hartz Mountains National Park where we can choose from a variety of walks including a well graded multi hour climb to Hartz Peak or a gentle stroll around the glacial formed Lake Osbourne. The area provides great views into the World Heritage listed Southwest National park with its jagged peaks and rugged wilderness. To complete this perfect day we travel to the sleepy port town of Dover where we have our accommodation for the evening. The evening’s meal will be at the converted old Dover post office which is now the home of the fabulous ‘6958’ restaurant showcasing some of our island’s finest foods.Walking time: up to 6 hours

Cockle Creek, return to Hobart

For the final morning of our southern adventure we enjoy an enchanting underground experience at the Hastings Caves, exploring the largest dolomite cave in the southern hemisphere. The spectacular formations and hall like passages are truly one of nature’s great wonders. No trip to the area is complete without following the road to Australia’s furthest most point at Cockle Creek. Form here we can set out to South Cape Bay, the final section of the famous South Coast Track. The relatively easy track will take us across coastal heathlands and through woodlands full of endemic birdlife and native plants, to the stunningly beautiful and unspoilt bay. From here the next stop is Antarctica! After a sumptuous picnic lunch enjoying the serenity of this superb location – and an optional swim from the white sandy beach – we make our way back to Hobart, stopping briefly at Willie Smiths Apple shed on the outskirts of Huonville for a coffee or an organic cider. The tour will conclude with you being dropped at your accommodation at approximately 5pm. Walking time: up to 5 hours
