Itinerary

Arrive San José

Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport and transferred to the group hotel. Our representative will provide you with a welcome kit with a welcome letter, map and a detailed itinerary of your holiday in Costa Rica. The remainder of the day is at leisure.Overnight at Park Inn Hotel (or similar).

To Tortuguero

After breakfast, it is an early morning departure for Tortuguero. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Braulio Carrillo National Park and then a two hour boat trip to the canals of Tortuguero. A typical breakfast is served on the way. Tortuguero National Park, with its 21,000 hectares of preserved tropical rain forest, provides one of the best opportunities to experience a wide range of tropical wildlife. Upon arrival at our lodge, we have lunch and take a hiking trip around the hotel property. It is amazing how so nearby your room you can find different kinds of monkeys, sloths, iguanas, poison arrow frogs and many birds and insects including the blue butterfly (Morpho peleides). In the evening, after a delicious meal, you will relax along the canal's edge with a cocktail and enjoy the night sounds of the jungle.Overnight: Laguna Lodge (or similar).

Tortuguero Canals

After breakfast, we enjoy a guided boat tour along the canals of Tortuguero National Park. A jungle adventure of a lifetime! We visit the canals within the National Park to discover a large variety of birds and receive detailed information on the flora and fauna of the area. We return to the lodge for lunch. The lodge will then schedule a tour to the village in the afternoon. This tour will provide detailed information on its history, culture and work in favour of conservation of the sea turtles and the flora and fauna in general.Overnight: Laguna Lodge (or similar).

Arenal

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic boat and bus transfer back to the town of Guapiles right in time for lunch. Enjoy a delicious lunch before a shuttle bus transfer to the Arenal area. Arenal’s perfectly symmetrical shape makes it a sightseer’s dream, while its abundance of outdoor activities makes it an easy place to check things off your “must-do in Costa Rica” list. So visit one of the nicest volcanoes in Costa Rica, cloud forests, a lake world-famous for windsurfing and an incredibly diverse population of wildlife is just part of what you will find in this amazing area of Costa Rica. Late afternoon arrival to our overnight accommodation in the Arenal area.Overnight: Volcano Lodge (or similar).

Monteverde

This morning is free to enjoy the spectacular Arenal area. This afternoon we depart the hotel for the scenic lake crossing (boat-car) to Monteverde. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most diverse and rich tropical cloud forests in the New World and home to the resplendent Quetzal and the rare bell bird. Monteverde is not only interesting for the Cloud Forest Reserve’s inhabitants, but also for its founders, the Quakers. After check-in, there is time to explore your new surroundings.Overnight: Trapp Family Lodge (or similar).

Monteverde Cloud forest and Sky Tram & Sky walk

In the morning we will hike through the well-marked trails of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This highland forest experiences almost 100% humidity all through the year, caused by moisture cladden north-easterly trade winds which blow in from the Atlantic. As they are swept up to the highlands, they cool and condense to form clouds which bathe the forest in a soft mist. Close to four meters of rain falls in the forest each year. The forest exudes an eerie atmosphere, with high misty canopies surrounding you, laden with hanging vines and unusual noises abound. Spectacular wildlife includes the Jaguar, Ocelot, Baird´s Tapir, Three-wattled Bellbird, Bare necked Umbrella bird and the magnificent Quetzal. We then enjoy an afternoon adventure on the Sky Walk & Tram that will take you up to the Continental Divide and to one of the highest mountains in the area. Sky Walk is a guided tour, which combines trails and suspension bridges. The tour gives you the opportunity to enjoy the flora and fauna of the area, always joined by one of our specialist guides. Sky Tram is a guided tour where you can have the opportunity to observe the cloud forest outstanding biodiversity, the majestic Arenal Volcano and the Nicoya Gulf.Overnight: Trapp Family Lodge (or similar).

Return to San Jose

This morning is at your own leisure. In the afternoon return to San Jose on your shuttle transfer. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure to explore San Jose.Overnight at Park Inn Hotel (or similar).

Trip concludes in San Jose

After breakfast there will be a group transfer to the airport.

From our well-appointed lodges we are led from the dense rainforest and beaches along the Caribbean coast to the cloud forests of the highlands. We hope to spot sea turtles while on the canals at Tortuguero, enjoy impressive birdlife in Monteverde Cloud Forest and the flawless silhouette of the Arenal Volcano.Please note: This itinerary is not exclusive to World Expeditions and is subject to change due to weather conditions and circumstances beyond our control. It should be used as a guide only. Group size for this trip is a maximum of 20, however services for the first section of the trip in Tortuguero can have a larger group size in peak season. Transfers in busses can have up to 50 people and boat transfers up to 40 people in high season. You will be accompanied by local guides who may conduct the day tours in English and other languages. The touring sections are guided and at other times you will be transported on a shuttle bus by a driver – the trip is not escorted throughout. You may travel with other people from other operators worldwide in a group and groups may consist of different travellers each day.
