You may have visions of beautiful beaches and endless cocktails (and those exist, if you want them!), but there is also rugged mountains, jungles packed with unique flora and fauna, underwater caves, volcanoes, and glaciers.
Whether you're into a remote experience far off-the-beaten-path or want to hop on a tour and sleep in comfort each night, there's a place for you in the south. It's time to pull out your bucket list and put these adventurous destinations at the top.

Guatemala
If Guatemala isn't on your adventure radar, it should be. A land of lakes, volcanoes, and waterfalls, this Central American country is small enough to explore and yet diverse enough to be surprised at every turn. While you're there, be sure to hike (or camp on!) one of the dozens of volcanoes.
Costa Rica
Travel to Costa Rica for the "Pura Vida," but don't miss the chance to plan some epic adventures while you're there. Beaches and jungles will be your playgrounds, with a few volcanoes and caves thrown in for good measure.
Bolivia
The three-day trip across the Salar de Uyuni salt flats—the world's largest salt flat—and the Bolivian Altiplano is a feast for the eyes and your camera lens. But don't make that your only stop in this South American country. There's plenty more to do, like trekking the ancient Incan route of the Takesi Trail and mountain biking the "Death Road" in La Paz.
Mexico
If you think Mexico is all about spring breakers and all-inclusive resorts, think again. From big wall climbing at El Potrero Chico to the waterfall-studded jungle at El Aguacero, you won't quite know what to make of this south-of-the-border adventure land. But we're pretty sure you'll be planning your next trip before you even get home.
Honduras
The Honduran island of Roatan is quickly gaining a reputation as an explorer's paradise. Snorkeling, kayaking, and diving are popular activities, but for those who want to go a bit off-the-beaten-path, try trekking through the Roatan jungle or ziplining through the canopy.
Argentina
It's no secret that adventure stoke in Argentina is hard to beat. From trekking in iconic mountains to exploring icebergs, there's plenty to see on the more well-worn travel route. If you're itching to see something new, check out the Marble Caves and La Buitrera Canyon.
