The South Holston Dam is truly a gem of a place in northeast Tennessee located about 45 minutes from Johnson City, TN and only 15 minutes from Bristol, TN and offers amazing lake, river and mountain views. Sit and watch a sunset or sunrise or just spend the day enjoying the peacefulness of the landscape.

Coming from US-421 turn off on Emmett Rd and keep left to get on Holston View Dam Rd and continue straight on this road by the river. There are parking spaces by the river below the dam and short easy trails to walk on next to the river. You’ll see fly fishers in the river below the dam on early mornings and you’ll want to take your time walking on some of the short river trails before or after you drive to the top of the dam to experience the lake and the mountains. Continue driving on the road up the hill past the bottom of the dam and towards the top where you will see parking spaces before and after the road that crosses the dam.

Take time to get out and walk across the dam and take in the lake and mountain views. Fall is especially beautiful here, but bring your camera no matter what season it is so you can try and capture the feeling of awe this place will leave you in. The peacefulness and serenity this place offers is the main part of this adventure along with forest, river, lake and mountain views that will make you want to come back again.

The TVA South Holston dam is a perfect place to enjoy beautiful views and spend time in nature. There is a place to put in kayaks, canoes, or stand up paddle boards. There are picnic areas. There are trails on the TVA property with incredible views. There are areas to walk around on top of and below the dam to take in the mountain views and beautiful water. This is a place everyone in the Tri-Cities needs to see.

The area is beautiful during the fall. Plenty of backroads to explore, especially for b-roll shots if you're looking to capture a big landscape photo while you're here.
