Expansive, beautiful beach IN the city. Dunes carved with small foot trails. Take your dog to the beach and let him or her run free (off-leash!). Abundant sand dollar findings! There are several short trails for you guys to get a run in. Duration: Depends on where your feet take you.

Fort Funston is an SF gem I discovered when looking for a dog friendly hike near the city. Located west of Lake Merced, you'll find a gorgeous Northern California beach oasis where you and your dog can run wild and free :). Parking is located at the top of the park where you'll descend a steep set of stairs to the beach. Lots of small trails carved into the hillside to explore, as well was vast sandy flats to meander and stroll. Sunset is usually a less busy time here - plus you get some spectacular views!

If you're planning on staying out at the beach for a while, swing by BART Grocery & BBQ and grab a plate of Korean BBQ to take with you.

Fort Funston Trail Reviews

I used to take my dog here everyday when I was in college. Make sure to check out the "ruins" of the old forts and watch the hang gliders jump off the bluffs!

If you go here midday on a weekday, you'll probably see upwards of 50+ dogs. It's amazing. Many of the dog walkers in SF take them here, and each of them will usually have around 5 dogs on or off leashes. If you want to meet some pups, this is your best bet. Also one of the best spots for hang gliding if you're into that, as it's very windy most of the time.

If you are one of the few people in San Francisco who doesn't have or can't have a dog, get your fix here! You will see more dogs here than anywhere else in the city. Also, it is a great place to fly a kite and just stroll around.
