Road-Biking in Bend, Oregon
Added by Joel Blatt
Mountain passes and peaks with picturesque views.
Adventure. Spring-Summer-Fall road-biking in Deschutes County.
Access. Starting points include Bend, Sisters, McKenzie Pass, and Sunriver.
Reconnaissance. Myriad segments create modifiable-by-design routes.
The classic rides from Bend are Century to or around Bachelor, Twin Bridges and Lower Bridge. However, nothing compares to the spiritual quality of climbing McKenzie Pass from Sisters out and back on 242. From Sunriver/La Pine, Paulina Lake Road is another good climb. Other favorites, include:
- Bend: Skyliners, Archie Briggs, and NW Summit
- Sisters/Crooked River Ranch: Holmes-Lower Bridge-Quail-SW Hill, Indian Ford-Green Ridge
Group rides. Join BendCycling on Google Groups for announcements.
- Rubber Mallet on Tuesday evenings (fast)
- Hammerfest on Tuesday evenings (really fast)
- Commons on Saturday mornings (can be road or gravel; see weekly notification)
Suppress. Three Creeks Road from Sisters is fantastic climb, but some of worst pavement you’ll ever find; Highway 20 (nasty traffic) offers long ride east to 27 (pleasant) and back on Alfalfa (nasty traffic.)
Extra. Crater Lake loop offers otherworldly views and incredible ride, but avoid car-free dates in September when lunatics come out en masse.
Events: Many to choose from with races to charity rides.
