Weekend get away at Elk Lake, Bend OR

Bend, Oregon

Description

Added by Warren Behymer

Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Cascades, Bend provides a natural playground for sporty travelers. Monolithic Mt. Bachelor offers up powdered slopes for skiers and snowboarders, while South Sister makes for a challenging summit climb. The mighty Deschutes River draws rafters, while mountain lakes provide serene surrounds for kayaking and canoeing. Hikers escape to miles of backcountry trails in the area.

I went there to get a pic of Spark Lake and Mount Bachelor, then after that I was going to backpack up to Mirror Lakes and take some night time pics.
Unfortunately the lakes were swamp areas and not suitable for camping at yet. I met a couple who invited me to stay with them at Elk Lake. I accepted their innovation and set up my tent down by the lake. Adam and his wife are locals who love to camp at Elk Lake and what I have learned is that these locals are very friendly to folks from all over.

The next day we were joined by two other families and hiked up a few different trails exploring, laughing and story telling. It was a wonderful experience. I took pics of the different areas we explored and at night I was able to try and experiment. The Milky Way popped out and the next morning we went paddle boarding and kayaking.

I would highly recommend to make the trip down to Bend, OR for any level of adventuring.

This campground site is first come first serve. You can not reserve a spot.

Fees: Per night, per site fee: $14/first vehicle; $7/each additional vehicle.Campground CampingOpen: May to Late September

Elk Lake Campground is an older style small hill side campground that is popular with tent campers. There are four tent only sites near the water. There is a pressurized water system and two modern CXT vault style bathrooms. There is cell phone coverage and the roads are paved within the campground. There is a day use area at the water front with a boat ramp.

RV Camping

This site is probably not the best for RV campers with RVs or trailers over 30 feet (except host site if unoccupied). The roads are somewhat difficult to navigate and the spurs are small.
