The hike to the summit of Chambers Mountain is on the gravel access road to the tower. Even though you are usually alone on this hike, there is the tower watchman that may be driving his truck, so pay attention while wandering around.

The road is mostly switchbacks to the left at and takes about 0.8 miles to reach the ridge-line. At the line you will be in a grassy meadow (note, there may be some livestock here as well). There will be amazing views on both sides of the ridge and you'll be totally exposed - in the summer this point is unbelievably hot and in the winter it is extremely windy so check weather conditions and plan accordingly.

You will see the road again at mile 1.3, after a double switchback where the climb is pretty steep under the summit. At 1.5 miles it switches back again 3 more times and the road straightens out at the summit. On the left is the watchman's house and the fire tower behind that.

Directions:

If you are coming from I-40, take Exit 27, U.S. 74 signed for Waynesville. On U.S. 74 (from either direction) take Exit 108, signed for U.S. 19 and Clyde. Drive East on U.S. 19 (Carolina Blvd.) for 0.8 miles down into the town of Clyde. Turn left onto Charles St. travels 0.2 miles and cross the bridge over the Pigeon River. Turn left onto Hyder Mountain Road (SR 1513) and proceed 0.3 miles. Turn right onto Chambers Mountain Road (SR 1534) and drive 1.3 miles to Lookout Point, on the left. This gravel road is signed for Chambers Mountain fire tower. Ascend the road for 0.6 miles to a right curve and a locked gate. Do not block the gate, the parking fits 1 maybe 2 cars.

Chambers Mountain Firetower Reviews

The hike is fun and has beautiful views, however it is on a gravel road as mentioned. Cows are all over the place and make the experience all the more interesting. At the top are wild flowers, amazing views, and the fire tower. Unfortunately you aren't able to climb up the fire tower as it is locked at the bottom and is guarded by a rabid dog. Don't worry about the dog though he is locked up in his cage and can't harm you. Haha. I still recommend this short adventure to all!

Pretty easy hike up Like already said its a dirt road. Views are nice one you hit the ridge line. Unfortunately the observing area on the fire tower was locked and appears to have been that way for some time now. Good quick 2-3 hour hike with a constant incline of switch backs
