This 14 mile section of the Appalachian Trail is full of breathtaking views from amazing grassy balds in the Roan Highlands. You can complete this hike in a day or split it into a multiple day backpacking trip. Either way, the trek is worth it.

We did this hike in a day and got a shuttle from Mountain Harbour B&B. Call them ahead of time and schedule a shuttle to take you back to Carvers Gap that afternoon. The AT will run right by their place and you will be able to hop on their shuttle and they will take you back to your car at the trail head. Cost is $40 for a carload of up to 4 people (it's $10 more for any additional hikers). If you are backpacking the parking fee is $2 a night. Make sure you get to the shuttle by 5:00 or you won't have a ride back to your car.

We got to the Carver's Gap trail head at 6:30am and were able to enjoy an amazing sunrise at 7:00 at the first summit, Round Bald. It was unreal and made for a great way to start our day.

Next, we headed over Jane Bald and went on to the Overmountain Shelter, also known as The Barn, which is 5.5 miles from the trailhead.

Next up, we climbed Little Hump Mountain. People often think this is Big Hump Mountain, and then realize theyre not quite there yet. Once you reach the summit of Little Hump Mountain you will see Big Hump Mountain, which is much bigger!

Coming down from Big Hump you'll end up in the forest again and the trail down starts to get more rocky and full of roots. It is roughly a 5.5 mile descent from the top of Big Hump Mountain to 19e.

At 19e, turn left for about a quarter mile, and the Mountain Harbour B&B will be on your right. We finished our hike at about 4:30 and got on our shuttle at 5:00. Got back to our car at 5:30ish. Happy hiking!
