The journey begins at the end of Greybeard Trail Road in the small community of Montreat, North Carolina. There is a small parking area with about 7 small car spaces available where the paved road ends.
The trail starts at the gravel parking area and follows Flat Creek for about a mile before making four switchbacks. At the first switchback, you can take a right for about a half of a mile to see a small waterfall or take a left and continue the trail to Greybeard Shelter.
After you reach Greybeard Shelter, you can take a slight left to experience breath-taking views of the Black Mountains of North Carolina from Walker's Knob. After you take some pictures and eat your lunch overlooking the mountains at Walker's Knob, I would suggest climbing the extra 2 miles to the summit of Greybeard Mountain.
NOTE: the weather has been known to change drastically in this area. Would suggest bringing appropriate rain gear or extra waterproof layers.
