Canoe or Kayak Lake Kabetogama

Added by Jess Curren

Large lake with many smaller islands - perfect for paddling!

Lake Kabetogama is located in Voyageurs National Park and is one of the main attractions for the park. We saw so many vehicles with boat trailers in every parking lot. There are houseboat campsites, lots of fishing, tour boats, rental canoes and kayaks. Since we don't own our own boats, we rented canoes from Arrowhead Lodge & Resort which was just down the hill from the Wooden Frog Campground. We were able to put in the water right from the lodge, but I believe you can put in from any of the Visitor Centers as well.

We went early in the morning as the wind was going to pick up later, but it was still a bit of a difficult paddle. We paddled out to some of the closer, small islands and explored some of the boat-in campsites. These sites can be reserved and would be a fantastic way to enjoy the area!

If you are truly feeling ambitious, you can paddle over to the Kabetogama Peninsula where there are fabulous hiking trails!

Tons Of Great Campsites!

I did a week long canoeing and camping adventure here. It was a wonderful time with friends. The worst part when you canoe here is that there are times when some motorists on the lake are ass holes and create giant wakes for you to have to paddle through. Oh yea, like my title says, the campsites are sweet. We put sheets up around the pit toilets to create “privacy.”

Backcountry Camping!

There are trails to hike, camp, and canoe the backcountry. What an excellent experience! Definitely going to be a trip every year!

Start Out Early

Great kayaking experience! Rough waves middle of the day so the earlier you start in the day the better. Also the only thing keeping this from five stars is the amount of motor boats on the lake. Not the best place if you are looking for isolation, the boundary waters would be better for that.
