You can stay nearby and enjoy the laid-back vibe of the Big Island at the Always in Season, Farmstead Suite. Have breakfast on your patio by making use of your own kitchenette, take a picnic lunch to the beach or on a hike in the neighboring hills, and then dine out in one of the many local cafes and restaurants featuring the best of Ono fish on their menus along with other traditional Hawaiian flavors.
Hawi is the past home to several 19th-century sugar cane plantations. But, during the 20th century seeing a decline of the sugar cane industry, many of the plantations shut down leaving this area of the island rather empty. It was only a couple of decades ago in which the barren downtown area came alive with the wonderful boutique shops and restaurants. A short, less than 20-mile drive, takes you to the Kohala Forest Reserve with beautiful drives and hiking trails overlooking the water. Nearby is the rainforest area of Pu'u O Umi Natural Area Reserve with beautiful waterfalls, and a variety of challenging hiking trails. As the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, Kapaau is an important part of Hawaiian history. Combined with the neighboring village of Hawi, the area is home in total to about 4,000 residents at the northern end of the Big Island. These quaint villages are full of fun and eclectic shops featuring unique local artwork, locally-sewn clothing, and more.
