Why You Should Study Abroad in New Zealand

Do you really need reasons to move to one of the most beautiful countries on Earth?

By: Lauren Schusterman + Save to a List

When I was deciding where to study abroad I was trying to think of a place where I could go spend the majority of my time outside and I thought of the perfect place: New Zealand. Soon I was on a plane across the Pacific to my new home. As soon as I landed I knew I was going to love it.

If you love the outdoors, New Zealand is the place for you. While it is a relatively small country, you could spend years exploring and still not see everything.  A quick couple week trip isn't enough to really see the country, thats why a semester (or a year) abroad is perfect.

Almost everyone studying abroad ends up buying a cheap car when they arrive so they can take weekend trips around the country, however there are buses that go all over both islands. Whether you chose to study on the North or South Island you'll have plenty to go see. Every weekend there are countless trips within a 4 or 5 hour drive. Whether you like surfing, hiking, backpacking, climbing, camping, or just walking around outside, you'll find endless things to do. You also get a mid-semester break where you can go on a longer road trip. There are several hikes including the famed Great Walks, which are often too long to do over a weekend but you'll still have plenty of time to get these longer adventures in. You'll also be done with finals sometime in late October or early November and have ample time to explore before you have to return home.

I had the time of my life and I could go on for pages about all of the incredible experiences I had while I was there.  However, I'm going post some of my photos and let them speak for themselves. Feel free to message me/comment if you have any questions!

We want to acknowledge and thank the past, present, and future generations of all Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples whose ancestral lands we travel, explore, and play on. Always practice Leave No Trace ethics on your adventures and follow local regulations. Please explore responsibly!
