The Outbound 2.0

Your favorite adventure travel tool gets a facelift.

By: Kyle Frost + Save to a List

Last month, I sent out an email asking our community to provide us with their feedback on their experiences with the Outbound so far. We were blown away by the passion and candor of thousands of survey responses, and I had 3 full days of back-to-back-to-back phone calls. We've been hard at work making updates to the site and planning things for 2018 that address many of the suggestions you provided. Today we're excited to announce the first major update to the Outbound website!

The TLDR:

Updates to improve search and discovery, photos, new designs for adventures, kits, and stories, and more!

An increased focus on discovery and travel

We've redesigned our homepage to bring a greater focus to search and content discovery. One of our biggest areas of growth has been internationally, with users from 192/195 countries in the last 30 days (looking at you, Western Sahara and North Korea), but many people don't realize that the Outbound works outside of North America. We want to be sure that our community knows they can easily find adventure anywhere, whether you're looking for something to do this weekend, planning travels abroad, or backpacking around the world.

Photos + Likes

We're inspired every day by the photos you share, so we wanted to make them easier for everyone to be inspired by each other. There's a new Photos page that allows you to see the most recent, trending, and popular photos on The Outbound. Show your appreciation by 'liking' photos from the photos section or on adventures. Add your own photos to any adventure!

Adventures

We moved a few things around for better organization of data, photos and related content. Another piece of feedback we received is that content on the site didn't feel connected enough, so now we recommend nearby adventures and relevant stories on every adventure.

Kits and Stories

These pages received a refresh to be more readable and browsable. Your header images are now a consistent size so you know what they're going to look like every time. We can't wait to see what you share.

Coming Soon: Android!

It's coming...the beta will be available for testing in the next few weeks! We're still doing testing, but click the button below if you're interested in getting on the beta invite list.

Coming Soon: More Events!

One of the biggest pieces of feedback we got from you is that you want more opportunities to connect with the Outbound community in-person. Last year's Pursuit Series was a great way to meet a ton of you and we're excited for this year's events in New York and Northern California (get your tickets if you haven't already!).

We've got MORE events on the way! Stay tuned for more info about a series of 1-day events coming soon.

THANK YOU

Nothing about the Outbound is possible without our amazing community, and we can't thank you enough for sharing your adventures, telling your friends about The Outbound, and generally being awesome.

Thanks to all of you that took the time to provide your thoughts, and we’re looking forward to an awesome 2018!

We want to acknowledge and thank the past, present, and future generations of all Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples whose ancestral lands we travel, explore, and play on. Always practice Leave No Trace ethics on your adventures and follow local regulations. Please explore responsibly!

Do you love the outdoors?

Yep, us too. That's why we send you the best local adventures, stories, and expert advice, right to your inbox.
