Photograph Elk and Bison Prairie at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area

Benton, Kentucky

Description

Added by Lucas Bremer

Native plants and animals thrive within a 700 acre piece of Western Kentucky Wilderness.

The Elk and Bison Prairie is a photographers dream within a 700 acre enclosure of native grassland habitat that was common to Kentucky over a century ago. Visitors travel within their enclosed vehicle via a 3.5 mile paved loop road.

About 50 bison and 50 elk call the area home. Entry fee is $5.00 per vehicle. Every experience is different, but very often, Large Elk and Bison will be close enough for everyone to photograph.

Many other animals call the prairie home. Many Turkey, occasional Coyotes, and even Bald Eagles call the area home.

There are interactive interpretive stations throughout the road that visitors can interact with to learn the history of the native grasslands and animals found here.

While on the road, visitors are asked to stay in your vehicle unless it is safe to do so and animals are not present.

*Fun Fact: The current herds of Elk in Eastern Kentucky and Great Smoky Mountains National Park both originated within this enclosure.
