The National Conservation Area (park fees) includes >30 miles of trails, which you drive through (13-mile-one-way-loop) to access trailheads. Parking gets crowded; get there early.
Many hikes to choose from, including Turtlehead Peak Trail, which is 4.7 miles and 1,991 feet of elevation.
Rather than paying fees and entering National Conservation Area, follow road towards Spring Mountain Ranch and find multiple trailheads for Oak Creek and First Creek, for example. We enjoyed First Creek and scrambled a bit, but did not summit Mount Wilson (maybe next time.) First Creek and Oak Creek Trail(s) can be connected, as well.
As you can see, views are awesome. Parking is on the street. No fees.
