everything about this hike is awesome. lots of great scrambling but no real exposure. trail wastes zero time gaining elevation. beautiful views! not very remote though so there will be crowds and you have a view of the city so not very off grid but very worth it!

This hike is VERY steep and the road up is just as advertised. I took a small 2wd Pontiac vibe thinking that the road descriptions were exaggerated (as they often are). In this case the descriptions are not exaggerated at all. I was BARELY able to rally that little car up that road by making my companions get out and hike up the steepest section then backing up and gassing it as hard as possible. It was quite the sight haha. I have driven many mountain roads and this is one that truly requires 4wd. The two nights we spent at Thornton lakes were awesome however due to the experience level of the group decided not to scramble all the way up Trappers peak. I am definitely planning on going back to bag the peak.

I have never gone beyond the falls but I have hiked the falls about a million times. The walk to the falls is so short and flat that it is worth going back over and over again. Getting down to the falls takes some skill so people who are not very steady on their feet will need a lot of help/shouldn't attempt. I love this one. It is a great little showcase of Washington's beauty. This is an awesome hike to take out of towners on if you only have time for a quickie but want to show them what our little corner of the world is all about.

I grew up hiking all over the mountain loop but for some reason I always passed on heather lake until this last weekend. I needed a shorter hike for my family and this was a great one. There were some good spots to let my two year old out of the back pack to roam and throw some rocks in the water and the towering cliffs above the lake are pretty awesome. The trail is very wet this time of year so prepare to step carefully or wear some good boots. with the kids it took my wife and I about 3 1/2 hours round trip (kids were in backpacks). There are several trees across the trail that would not be a problem normally but with a kid on my back it got a little tricky.

I have been up heliotrope ridge several times while climbing Mt. Baker and a few times as a day hike. It is probably one of the best day hikes I have ever been on. Make sure you give yourself a lot of time because it might be short but is very steep. There is also lots of exploring to do when you get to the top. It doesn't really come a definite end as lots of climbing routes take off from the viewpoint. If you go up higher you can snag a sweet tent pad and spend a beautiful night.

If you are into scrambles this basin makes a great base camp. I did this as a one night trip with some friends a few years ago and it was incredible. We camped at the lower end of the basin by a small lake and scrambled up Del Campo the next day. Make sure you find a good route description if you add Del Campo to your trip. We took the wrong route and ended up VERY exposed. It was one of the greatest one night trips I have ever been on and is out of this world beautiful. If you day trip it you will find yourself wishing you had your overnight gear because you won't want to leave and there is so much to explore. Several peaks surrounding the basin can be scrambled.
