Description

Added by The Outbound Collective

Jack Markell Trail is a point-to-point trail in Delaware that has endpoints at the Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge (Wilmington) and W 3rd St. (New Castle). It spans just under 8 miles.

The path was formerly known as the Industrial Track Greenway Trail after the old operating freight line. It is now paved and a fairly easy trail with minimal elevation. You’ll note some of the most scenic parts of the trail include views of Christina River in downtown Wilmington, several bridges, and an impressive 2,300-foot boardwalk directly above the marsh of the Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge. The trail will also take you by the Delaware River in New Castle, ending just north of Battery Park.

This paved trail is perfect for runners, walkers, and bikers. The pathway is also dog friendly, but all dogs must be leashed. The Jack Markell Trail is part of the East Coast Greenway, which will eventually connect trails spanning from Maine to Florida.

Parking: You can park at the northern end of the trail in Wilmington at the Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park (80 Rosa Parks Dr.) or at the Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge (1400 Delmarva Lane). Alternatively, you can park at the southern end of the trail in New Castle off Delaware St./Route 293 or in Battery Park (1 Delaware St.).

Hike Jack Markell Trail Reviews

This is a fantastic boardwalk-type trail through marshlands. We started at the Wilmington Riverfront. Plenty of parking and you can go as far as you’d like. If you’re riding bikes, you can ride south into New Castle along the River. Would be great to grab a beer in non-Covid times.
