Description

An easy hike that loops through beautiful open meadows near the red rock formations. Good for strollers, wheelchairs, and perfect for families or beginner hikers.

The Fountain Valley Trail at Roxborough State Park is a very easy trail that's perfect for those that want to enjoy the outdoors but not subject themselves to the rigors of climbing a 14er. This very well maintained trail is wide and flat and perfect for groups, families, or for taking visitors that might not be used to high elevation just yet.

This self guided trail starts at the Visitors Center and will lead the hiker on a loop through the Fountain and Lyons formations on moderate grades. If you do the trail in the clockwise fashion, you will start by walking through the geologic formations. The vibrant red rocks make excellent subjects for the photographer, as do the different varieties of wildflowers that will be present in the spring and early summer.

Continuing on the trail, you will reach verdant, wide open meadows that make an excellent habitat for the wildlife that call the park home. Be on the look out for mule deer, fox, hawks and eagles.

About halfway through the trail you will reach the historic Persse House. Henry S. Persse was one of the first land owners in the area and built his house here in the early 1900s. Take a stop to learn about his plans to develop the area into a world class resort complete with hotel and golf course.

After leaving the Persse House, the trail will take hikers on the east side of the Hogback and meander through rolling grassland. Be sure to a take a short detour when you see the sign for the Lyons Overlook as this will take you to an elevated overlook of the formations.

Take pictures of the red rocks, or stop to have a snack before you head back to the main trail which will eventually lead you back to the Visitors Center.

Things to note:

  • This trail has little shade, so be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen.
  • Be aware for rattlesnakes and poison ivy as both are present in the park.
  • Mountain biking, rock climbing, and horse back riding are not allowed in the park.
  • Hikers must stay on the trail. Do not cut switchbacks as this causes erosion.
  • Dogs are not allowed, so be sure to leave Fido at home.
  • The park entrance fee is $7, be sure to have cash on hand.
  • The park is quite popular on the weekends, especially in the summer, so be sure to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening if you want to avoid lines at the entrance gate. When the lot is full, rangers restrict cars to one-out-one-in. Wait times generally don't exceed 20-30 minutes, but who likes waiting in line???

Hike the Fountain Valley Trail at Roxborough State Park Reviews

This trail is great for anyone, the rock formations are really incredible and being surrounded by the structures and some old architecture is a really cool thing.

Me and my boyfriend did this hike on a sunny day and we loved it. It's one of the prettiest hikes I've been on that is mostly a flat trail. If you do this hike make sure to put on sunscreen beforehand!

Definitely bring your camera here in the during fall colors.
