Close to Denver with great views of Mount Evans, Pikes Peak, Longs Peak and Squaw Mountain to name a few. The hike is short with a variety of landscapes as you make your way to the top.

This hike can be achieved without great effort and the views are rewarding! Despite the trail being so short there is a variety of scenery as you make your way to the peak.

From I-70 turn south onto CO HWY 74/Evergreen Parkway. Turn west onto Squaw Pass Road. Exactly 12 miles down the road you will see the main sign and entrance for Echo Mountain Ski Area. Immediately after the entrance there is a pull out parking on the right side of the road and the trail starts on the left side of the road.

Begin up the gradual winding incline through the forest. Shortly into the hike you will come across a gravel road. Cross the gravel road and there is a sign, "Chief Mountain/ Idaho Springs" where you'll continue up to Chief Mountain. The signs claim it's 2 miles away but I would say it's actually only 1.5 miles.

The first half of the hike takes you through an alluring alpine forest. You will notice the landscape begin to change as you reach the tree line. At that point the trail does become a little more rocky. If you look north you will see Idaho Springs way below you. Enjoy the mountain views as you continue up as well as the beautiful Bristlecone pine trees.

After a few switchbacks you will reach an opening where you will see the peak. There is a very small amount of scrambling to actually get to the top of the peak. From here just sit back and enjoy the views!
