Starting at 10,040 ft in elevation and climbing 4,700 ft this 9.00 mile roundtrip hike is well worth it! Being the highest mountain in Colorado and 2nd tallest in the lower 48 the milage of hiking and elevation change makes for an unforgettable, intermediate hike.

From U.S. 24 south of Leadville, CO. turn onto Colorado 300, you'll cross over railroad tracks then continue for 0.7 miles to county road 11 where you'll turn left towards Halfmoon Creek. After driving 1.2 miles turn right onto a dirt road towards Halfmoon Creek. Continue for 5 miles on dirt road until you see Mt. Elbert Trailhead on the left. Trailhead provides large parking lot and bathrooms. Starting the ascend at 10,040 ft you climb a total of 4,700 ft in elevation to the summit and 9.00 miles round trip. The summit of Mt. Elbert is absolutely breathtaking. Bring layers, lots of water and protein bars. Make sure you have a camera as well, you won't want to forget this experience.
