Unique and thrilling experience on the reservoirBring food and some extra coffee to make a day of itClose drive from Gunnison
Experience the uniqueness of ice skating on large pieces of ice, sometimes miles in length. Ice forms between snow storms in the early winter months November - January. There is nothing more special or exciting than being able to skate miles of clear black ice. An adventurous soul, an understanding of the dynamics of ice, and knowledge of ice safety are key to having a good time. Be sure to NEVER skate alone.
The reason this unique experience is that Gunnison's winters have consistently cold temperatures, allowing for ice to grow and typically not melt until spring. Not many other areas in the country experience this.
To get here, drive 9 miles west of Gunnison to Blue Mesa Reservoir. I recommend talking with locals to find out if there is ice to be skated. The "ice" events are more rare than common, so be prepared to travel a moments notice.
