Only 20 min from downtown Vancouver, this 2 hour hike has stunning views of of Vancouver and the surrounding area, with very minimal elevation gain. Can be completed year-round.

The trail begins in the furthest northwest corner of the parking lot, by a big trail map. The start of the trail is gradual and meanders through the forest. The trail then begins to become more technical and requires scrambling over rocks and up areas with roots. Although this hike has minimal gain, you must watch your footing while on the trail.

After walking around 1 km, you will arrive at Frist Lake. Cross over the small bridge and continue your way up and over a few hills and over the small wooden boardwalks. The trail is easy to follow and well marked. After walking another 1.5 km, you will reach a rocky outcrop with stunning views of the Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park, and downtown Vancouver and the entire lower mainland.

Stop to admire the view and keep an eye out for the Whiskey Jacks as they love to say "hello" and will land on your hand if you put it out. Just remember not to feed them bread as it's bad for them. If you plan on feeding them bring unsalted nuts and dried fruit for them.

Once you are done with a snack and enjoying the view, retrace your steps back to the parking lot.

Parking is free in the off-season, but you will have to pay in the summer months.

Hike Dog Mountain, BC Reviews

Nice, meandering trail that has a few ups and downs, but no gruelling climbs. I went in mid May and we were walking in snow for at least one third of the way, so bring proper footwear. Lots of mud makes things a bit slippery as well. Gorgeous view of the city at the top!

A great trail year-round for either hiking in the summer or snowshoeing in the winter. Gets very busy later in the day so worth early rise. Quite a flat trail all the way along with a great view at the end. As the name suggests lots of dogs on the trail. Will have snow on it until mid-July so worth bringing good shoes/boots even if its nice and hot in Vancouver by the water.
