Old Man, or Roche Bonhomme is an epic mountain in Jasper National Park. There are no switchbacks on this hike, it is a straight climb right from the start. And it is steep. Within the first 3 km you gain 1,000 ft. of elevation. This is one of the tougher hikes I have ever done due to the grade of the mountain. Round trip, including hanging out on the summit took about 6 hours.

This isn't a hike you see many tourists on, which is nice in Jasper. There isn't a trailhead with a park sign on it, or trail markers throughout the hike, but the trail is very easy to follow. I didn't see any other hikers the day I did it. But, I did did see a momma bear and two cubs! Make sure to pack bear spray and make noise along the hike, especially if you are hiking alone

The hike starts out in the forest and after a couple minutes it is a straight climb. After breaking tree-line, there is some (okay, a lot) of scrambling before reaching the top. Take a few moments to appreciate the views of Maligne Lake and Jasper Town. They are one-of-a-kind from here.

Finding the trailhead can be tough especially if you don't live in Jasper and know the area well. Here is some more explanation...

Directions: On highway 16 head North East across Moberly Bridge towards Maligne Canyon. Park at the Maligne Canyon Parking lot and walk up along the highway a little past the Maligne hostel the trailhead is off to the left.
