So sad to see the path was closed. Planned on shooting sunset and got there to find the trail closed with several signs about not trespassing. The area is beautiful though and you can partially see the waterfall from the road. It sounds like a few inexperienced climbers have tried climbing and have fallen to death and that is why the path is closed.

You wouldn't think to find a mountain biking trails in Illinois. But Saw Wee Park is just that. With several miles and loops of single track trails and sloping moguls and small hills, this is a great place to get a thrill in and get dirty. The trails are nice and maintained, but could use some more directional arrows and signs to direct riders and hikers back to the parking lots. The hills can become steep and rocky at parts, but as long as you have a good suspension, are well equipped, and have a helmet, you will be all good. Even if you don't have a bike, hiking is still a plus here.

The I&M Canal (to my knowledge), runs from Joliet, Illinois to Utica, Illinois. I have only been on a portion of the trail in Morris, Illinois. The trail runs along the old canal for miles on end. It passes rivers, lakes, marshy wetlands, little towns, and through forests. The trail is pretty well maintained except for a bridge that collapsed due to flooding years back and was never repaired without the money to do so. This trail is perfect to use if you are looking to get a afternoon walk in or if you are looking to catch some fish. I have seen some kayakers on the canal, but I personally would not recommend kayaking just because there are several downed trees from past storms. If you are looking for a nice, peaceful, and not very used trail, this is perfect for you.

What used to be hidden gem in Illinois is now the popular place to go. Matthiessen State Park is now bustling weekdays and weekends with avid hikers, adventurers, and everyday go-getters. The park's history is interesting to read into, but seems to be not well emphasized by the park. Instead, the park looks to interest their visitors with the picturesque views. The park has two main waterfalls with several smaller cascades hidden throughout enormous canyon walls. The park, once untouched, is now graffiti ridden. The problem lies with the state of Illinois. Without proper budget funding, the park has less money to work with to uptake and maintain a clean status. Nonetheless, the park is a wonder to see and view yourself. With miles of hiking trails and plenty to see and explore, you will be tired by the end of the day, going home. Matthiessen, while not always uptaken properly, is a park that anyone living or visiting Illinois, should see.

Cade's Cove was my favorite spot in the park and seeing it on a crisp July morning was truly amazing. Not only do you get amazing views out of it, but you get to see and explore some awesome historic structures!

First backpack trip was over the Paintbrush divide and down to Lake Solitude when I was 14 years old. It was still July and there was snow everywhere. Right before crossing the divide, a storm cloud rolled in dumping rain and hail on us. Lightning and thunder shook the sky as we ran across the divide. We started making our way down towards Solitude Lake and the sky cleared up right then. Unparalleled views of the mountains. Truly amazing!

We always go down here for our school photo program and every time we visit we are always treated to great views!
