Hiking Matanuska Glacier
Sutton, Alaska

Easy to findIncredible viewsFun for everyone
Probably one the coolest things to do in Alaska...hike on a glacier. The Matanuska Glacier is an awesome place to start. Over 29 miles long and 4 miles wide in some parts this glacier is one of the largest you can get to by vehicle.
Access this amazing hike off of the Glenn Highway. There will be signs directing and warning you when you are close. Use the map below to get to the glacier headquarters. You must park here and go inside the little gift store to fill out a wavier and pay the entrance fee. Not a bad price for what you are about to see and do.
From here you will drive about 3 miles to the glacier, where you will park. After gearing up you will hike roughly 0.5 miles through the glacier outwash on a marked path. Be careful not to step of the path! Once you get past the outwash and onto the ice you can go in any direction you want. Depending on your skill level you can stay back and watch people climb the glacier or you can keep hiking and challenge yourself.
- Extreme caution should be made while hiking on this glacier, crevices and holes in the glacier can be hard to spot. Always be aware of your surroundings!
After hiking stop by at Long Rifle Lodge to grab a bite to eat and relax!
