Killer climbing in the middle of nowhere Alabama! Bouldering, sport, trad, it has it all from beginner to elite. A literal maze of free standing pinnacles with climbs around every corner.

Sand Rock is a unique set of rock outcropping that erupts from Shinbone Ridge overlooking scenic Lake Weiss. The climbable rock runs for about a quarter of a mile along the ridge and is a maze of trails, small caves and literally wall-to-wall climbing.

You can find just about any climb to satisfy your vertical appetite whether it be jug, crimp, or crack, and be assured there is technical diversity for the most demanding seeker of 5.13.

What I love most about Sand Rock is its variety and the amount of climbs compacted into this bizarre playground of stone:

  • unlimited bouldering scattered about
  • 140+ routes with over half bolted for sport climbing
  • plenty of traditional routes for the climber wanting to push their skills.

Talk about easy, you can literally start climbing 100 feet from parking the car, and facilities continue to improve since becoming The Cherokee Rock Village County Park. While not close to the bigger chains of climbing areas found in Tennessee, Sand Rock is worth spending at least a day exploring the many challenges to be found.

Climb Sand Rock Reviews

There was some really nice boulder problems here as well as top rope, lead, and trad routes of various difficulties. I'm just now getting good enough to transition from top roping to lead climbing, and I will definitely be practicing here.

This was great to go as a beginner and as I am moving to be more of an intermediate I find myself trying more and more difficult routes. So many routes and just a beautiful area.

One of the best places for sport climbing in Alabama. Can get pretty popular on good weather weekends. Routes are really diverse. Bathrooms, showers, running water, etc. are available at the campground. Overall a pretty good place to climb/camp.

Some of the more interesting climbs are a little below the rest but it's overall a great place to climb
