Description

Added by Edward Day

King's Chair Overlook is a moderately steep hike up in Oak Mountain State Park that leads you to one of the best views south of Birmingham, Alabama.

The pin leads you to the parking lot of Oak Mountain State Park. To get into Oak Mountain State Park there is a $5 fee. From the parking lot, the trail head is easily visible and right across the road. The trails split in a couple of different directions at the trail head, but to go to the King's Chair Overlook, follow the blue trail. The trail is a little over 2 miles and is inclined for most of the way up. Following the sparse blue markings along the trail, you will eventually run up on Eagle's Nest Overlook. Continue past the Eagle's Nest Overlook and after a little longer you will run up on an incredible view. When walking up to the edge of the cliff, you will look for a rocky overlook with a small rock seat that has been named the "King's Chair" (as pictured above). There are tons of trees around that are great for setting up your portable hammock. Enjoy!

King's Chair Overlook Reviews

It’s shorter and easier than the blue trail

I travel to Oak Mountain State Park as often as I can and have hiked and biked almost every trail in the park. All of them are great, and this one is no exception. Well-kept trails (most of the time, at least), beautiful forest, and not an over-abundance of people to pass on the trail. This is definitely one of the best scenic views in the park. Be sure to bring plenty of water though, the hike is fairly hot in most seasons (this is Alabama, after all...). For anyone who wants to add to the experience, I like to supplement hikes through the sport of geocaching. There are tons along this trail, and they take you to some lesser-known spots! (Just google it for more info)

One of the better views in Bhm area. Well worth the hike, even in 30 degree weather!
